Do your children like to have fun with their food?
Or maybe it’s your HUSBAND who likes to get creative??
Well, in our home, everything gets a new spin from time to time, and one day it was our grilled cheese on toast.
I can no longer remember how this happened, but it no doubt had something to do with Tristan liking things in just a certain way and it didn’t happen. When he gets upset like this, deflecting and redirecting his attention onto something else is always good way to go.
I remember when he was about 2 and his porridge was in the microwave. It rose up and over the edge of the bowl and he was so upset about it! I had to do some quick on-the-spot thinking and told him that the porridge was just so excited it was doing a ‘happy dance’! It worked, and to this day, when the porridge boils over, it’s known as the ‘happy dance’ and now gets giggles from the kids (but not usually me – I have to clean up the mess…)
Now back to the cheese on toast.
Why just slice some cheese and plop it on the toast before it goes under the oven grill? That’s too boring! And who wants to be boring? Not us, we enjoy being creative with our food.
We’ve even been able to apply this technique to our current art class! Instead of slicing the cheese, Tristan used some grated cheese and made a mosaic to create his Star Wars tie fighter toast!

On one of the first occasions Kallista chose to have Daddy make her a house.
You never know what will be served to you in our house! In the past we’ve also seen X-wings, Wonder Woman’s plane, a flower, a car…. and the list goes on.
The secret to ours is to lightly toast the bread first, and then put the cheese on top before it goes under the grill of the oven. And sometimes we add a little freshly ground pepper or Italian herbs mix over the top as well. If you’re looking for cheese on toast with a little more of a grown-up flavour, try Welsh Rarebit!
