This summer I’ve been trying to catch up on some crafts I’ve had in the back of my head. With Julia Dweck’s convenient review of Mary Had A Sleepy Sheep on Tuesday, this was the perfect opportunity to make hand print sheep art.

A friend sent me an email TWO years ago and it’s been sitting in my inbox waiting for this day! Well, I should have actually referred to this email before starting the project because it isn’t quite the same, but ours has worked quite well in the end.
The children cut some rolling hills from a piece of green paper and glued it to a piece of blue paper.
Kallista loved the next step of painting her hand with white paint!
She placed her hand on the paper, which was turned upside down. Her thumb was the sheep’s head, and her fingers, the legs.
Next the children used cotton balls to create some clouds in the sky.
A piece of yellow paper cut into a circle was glued on for a sun.
I thought I would bring in some distance perception to the mix and discussion. The children painted up their thumbs and made sideways prints on another hill to make sheep in the distance. Paint on a finger tip made the heads.
When the paint had dried, they drew features on all of the sheep. And pulled apart some cotton balls to use as wool on the big sheep.
Now we have a scene straight from the rolling green hills of the Emerald Isle! (And I can file my email π ) To extend our fun, we’ve also made a Shepherd’s Stew with Sleepy Sheep Dumplings. Great on the stove or in the slow-cooker for a back-to-school supper
See our pages on handprint/footprint art, and spring ideas for more activities.

adorable! I haven’t done handprint artwork in a couple years, time for an update! I did a frame for mother’s day and made fingerprint caterpillars and butterflies on the mat. One for each of grandmas and made myself one too π

That sounds very cute! And of course, the Grandparents can’t have all the work, we must keep some for ourselves, too π
