We’ve been learning about the weather for about two years now. It started with a song we used in Japan with the young children as a warm-up to get them thinking in English at the start of a class. Since then we’ve been expanding on it at home.
We have purchased a weather and calendar chart for £1. We use it as a ‘guide’ We sing the days of the week and then choose the correct day on the chart.
Then we sing about the months of the year and choose that month on the chart. Then I write the information into the correct locations. We can practice our letter recognition while doing this as well. Soon Tristan can start to write the letters himself.
Then we look outside to see what kind of a day it is and mark the weather on the chart
After a year or so of doing this I thought we should add to it a little so I made up a larger board to chart the weather over a week, once in the morning, and again in the afternoon. The weather tends to change quite a lot here. This way we can look for trends in the weather and see how it progresses throughout the week.
Our most recent addition has now been to dress some international paper dolls in accordance with the weather each morning. Each child chooses a doll and the clothes to dress it in. These dolls and clothes are available at http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/paper_dolls.htm
Then we sing about the weather. On this day is looks like it was windy. We add different gestures to the song accordingly.
How’s the weather? It’s windy.
How’s the weather? It’s windy.
How’s the weather? It’s windy.
It’s windy today.
This also seems to be one activity where the children actually want to help clean up!
