While we were visiting Nana and Papa in Saskatchewan, they thought it might be fun for Tristan to see a carrot top grow. I think the main part of the carrot went into a lentil bake, and these tops were left over.
Nana found a VERY large mug and put a little bit of water in the bottom (how silly, of course it’s in the bottom, where else would the water be?) and set the carrot tops in the water, leafy part up.
She found a popsicle stick to track the growth of the carrot top, and away we went.
They marked off the height of the largest leafy carrot top on the stick.
We all checked on the progress of the carrots each day.
Every couple of days we tracked the progress by making a new mark on the stick.
Even Auntie Coralie was interested and involved in the growth of the carrots!
After 10 days this was the result at the end of our experiment.
The experiment was a resounding success; just look how much the leaves grew!
We’ve also done other kitchen science experiments such as Sink or Float with lemons and limes, an insulated water bottle cover, and a solar oven. Give one a try on a rainy day!

I tried this in first grade classes and never got it to work, at least not that we could stand the odor. It was nice to see you were able to get the carrot tops to grow! Carolyn

Mom did this with us when we were younger, too. She always has great ideas which always seem to work for her. I was surprised at how quickly they grew!
