Movie Night Degustabox Top Picks
Each month we feature our top picks in the box. Of course, these choices are based on our own tastes, and I’d love to hear what your favourites are, just pop them down in the comments at the end of this post.
The overall top pick this month for the whole family are the Haribo fruitilicious. The little sweets are shaped like their flavour (pineapple, lemon, lime, orange, strawberry, raspberry) and have cute little faces. They have 30% less sugar but they are so packed with fresh flavour that I prefer these over the regular ones. I checked the label and the sugar hasn’t been replaced with artificial sweeteners, which also makes them top in my books!
I haven’t seen Tootsie Rolls in so long! They remind me of Halloween in Canada as a child! These little rolls are soft and rich. I like that they aren’t so chewy that I need to worry about my fillings falling out, but they also aren’t too soft. These are going to be savoured for a while!
The Kids’ Top Picks
The children always have fun trying out the Degustaboxes and choosing their top picks, too. They also like the Haribo as much as we did.
In addition, they also thought highly of the The Protein Ball Co. as they were able to carry along a package and then have a snack during a walk instead of having to carry their heavy backpacks all the way home before having a nibble. We were surprised that we thought we could taste some cinnamon in the balls, but it isn’t listed on the ingredients. And Tristan really does not like nuts but very surprisingly for everyone, he chose these as his top choice!
Kallista’s other top choice this month is the DR Karg Emmental Cheese & Pumpkin Seed crackers. You can smell the emmental cheese when you open the package, and see it melted over the tops of the crackers. It’s contrasted by the big green pumpkin seeds giving more texture and flavour to the crackers. Crackers are a huge thing in our home (more so than cookies), and these are crispy, flavourful, and I’m sure Kallista also loves that they are so large – they can hold a lot of toppings, or just be simply enjoyed as they are. The cheese gives a nice taste, but it isn’t overpowering, either. I also like these a lot.
Tristan has a dairy allergy so he couldn’t try the crackers, but he really loved the pretzel bites. He carried them along one cold afternoon when we went for a brisk walk to the pond. These little bites are much smaller than I was expecting; they’re a little smaller than a chickpea. They taste a little different than a twisted pretzel, but they aren’t as delicate. I don’t think there was a broken one in the bag. You can taste the roastiness of the pretzels, and although they are salted, the salt is quite subtle.
More Great Products
My children love dried fruit so they also really like the Emily Crisps. We received some pineapple ones. They were little pineapple rings sliced thinly and dried. There aren’t many in a bag, but it boasts that it is one of your daily five. The fruit is crunchy, sweet, and delicious. It’s a good snack to keep in your desk drawer, car glove box, or backpack for when a sweet craving hits.
Phil really enjoyed the New York Cheesecake KitKat. KitKats are one of my favourites, but I am more of a traditionalist and in general I’m not a fan of cheesecake, but Phil loves cheesecake and really took to this chocolate bar and was eyeing up my half, too! It was sweet, crunchy, and, well, cheescakey, too.
We weren’t quite sure what to think of the cactus water. It’s coloured red by beetroot juice (which you can’t taste). It has a subtle flavour, which doesn’t quite marry with the stronger colour. I couldn’t quite place the flavour, but not having had water from a cactus before, that isn’t surprising. I thought it did taste a little like watermelon and kiwi. Unfortunately, these are not my favourite water flavours so I wasn’t moved. The rest of the family does enjoy those flavours but still weren’t too keen on the cactus water. Maybe it just takes a little while to get used to it. But for those who do enjoy watermelon and kiwi, you certainly may enjoy this unique drink.
