Are your children excited about Christmas? Are they asking about Santa and his reindeer? Reindeer antlers are always fascinating for children it seems, so why not make your own 5-minute reindeer antlers headband?
Two years ago we weren’t feeling well in the run up to Christmas, but we were still in the festive mood. Tristan was 3 and was all about Christmas crafts. In fact, I think we did one craft or activity every day during December!
On this day we weren’t feeling up to very much, but when the questions turned to antlers I figured Tristan might like to have his own. From start to finish this only took a few minutes, but it was such a hit that Tristan made sure his antlers were put away with the Christmas decorations for the next year. And last year he took them out and both children had fun with them, and back they went up to the attic for more play again this year!
All you need for this reindeer antlers headband is some brown construction paper, or for more durable antlers you could use some cardboard painted brown, or even some craft foam.
In addition to this a pair of scissors and some tape or a stapler and you’re set to go.
I cut two strips of brown construction paper about 3cm wide and stapled them together end-to-end. Then I wrapped this band around Tristan’s head to fit it to size and then stapled the other ends together so that the band sat firmly but comfortably around his head above his ears.
I wasn’t feeling up to being too technical, so I just drew an antler shape free-style from a piece of the construction paper. Then I held it against another piece and used it as a template for Tristan to cut the second antler out.
I stapled one antler to each side of the band and Tristan was set to bound about the house and guide Santa and the rest of his reindeer around the world. He even had the red nose from his cold to help put him in character!
Since we’ve made these simple reindeer antlers I’ve also seen them done by turning handprints into the antlers, which would be a nice touch. Perhaps this year we’ll try a set of these for Kallista so she can have her own set. I think she’ll have a set made with her hand prints as she loves to trace around her own hands.
Speaking of reindeer, which of Santa’s reindeer is your favourite?
